Fondazione Innovazione Urbana

The Foundation for Urban Innovation (FIU) is a centre of analysis, communication, processing and co-production on urban transformations to address social, environmental and technological challenges. 

The goals and the action of the Foundation are developed along four main thematic axes, which mark the different but intertwined directions Bologna wishes to drive itself in the next years: Welcoming city - New urban Welfare - Urban and digital democracy - Sustainable city. In this framework, the Foundation aims to affirm and consolidate more and more its role of “collective brain” and a city hub of urban transformations, a catalyst for ideas and activities, as well as a place for meeting and discussion among citizens, public institutions, , associations and movements, expressions of the economic, social and cultural world. In order to actually fulfil these goals we have identified three main areas the many activities of the Foundation can be grouped in.

• Urban Center: activities of information and promotion of the local area and of urban culture. Part of this approach is the “historical/chronicle” role of the tale about the city from the city, focussing especially on the territory and its metamorphoses, on the dynamics of the territory itself and the address it moves towards. The Foundation curates and hosts in its spaces a permanent exhibit on the urban transformations of the city, currently being developed and prepared in the new venues of the Salaborsa and Palalzzo d’Accursio ground floors, identified as potential venues as part of the Laboratorio Urbano Aperto (Open Urban Laboratory) project.
• Civic Imagination: the Foundation promotes the Civic Imagination, that is paths of listening, collaboration, participation and co-production in relation to projects and policies of the city, its neighbourhoods and the entire metropolitan area, with a specific attention to the care and regeneration of city assets.
• Mapping the present: analysis and documentation of urban transformations. The Foundation promotes research activities and documentation on the transformations of thecontemporary world, making the most of the use of maps and multimedia technologies.
