The Association for social promotion Vicini d’Istanti was established to promote a change in the perception of migrants in Italy, to promote new forms of inclusive citizenship, to accelerate the processes of social and labour integration of asylum seekers and refugees and to encourage opportunities for knowledge and cultural exchange with the local population. The objectives are to support, over time, a number of working projects by individual immigrants, providing a consultancy service and facilitating the start-up of small business projects, including social tailoring; to promote intercultural knowledge and exchange, through the organisation of convivial moments such as parties, workshops, fashion shows, conferences, outings, and through the printed and multimedia dissemination of what has been created, shared and explored together.

SPECIAL PROJECT 2020

The Vicini d'Istanti tailor's shop reacted to the health emergency by rethinking its mission, organisation and profound identity in an innovative way. In the initial months, this meant questioning the skills of the project's actors, scrutinising strengths to be exploited and weaknesses to be monitored in the tailor's shop; then concrete solutions were sought, in relation to the new way of working imposed by the emergency situation. The next steps (still in progress) concern the standardisation of the processes of design, prototyping, production and promotion of products and services with the help of technology, oriented towards product sustainability. Closing the tailor's shop for lockdown and reopening it after 3 months triggered an acceleration of some novelties that were already emerging in the last months of 2019, such as the creation of a new website with e-commerce, the need to share ideas and operational methods with all the subjects working in the tailor's shop, the desire to create a sustainable product, the responsibility to be carriers of integration. This is why the first remote fashion show was organised for the Terra Equa Festival and an online sewing course was promoted during the summer months. The challenge of being #distantimavicini is now pushing them to propose other courses through internet platforms, to improve the website and the use of social media to reach more people and to propose workshops on ethical fashion for the city and schools in a remote mode.
